Weihnachtszeit / Christmastime

Namaskaram everybody  :)

Finally here is another blogpost!

First I want to tell you about my trip to Chintamani. Nele, Elisa and I went on one of the advent weekends to Chintamani, this is city 1 ½ hours from Ramasamudram. There lives another volunteer who comes from Denmark. She is a trained nurse and working in a hospital in the city. Even though I really like to be in Ramasamudram I liked to get out of the village for a weekend. We did some awesome Christmas shopping. It was really funny to sleep directly in the hospital. Nele and I had to share a hospital bed which was fortunately very spacious.

Our Modern English Medium School Christmas function was on the 22.12. It was really good. The students sang Christmas carols, played the nativity play and made pyramids. Everybody enjoyed the function and was happy. Some friends of Avinash also helped us to build a Christmas tree. It came up really nice.

Me and Revathi next to the christmas tree

At the 23.12.my parents came to Ramasamudram to celebrate Christmas with me. They came to Bangalore on the 22.12. and spent one night in hotel. I had to get up at 4 am to pick them up at 7 am. After that we had to pick up Elisa’s boyfriend at the airport. Then we went to have a really (south-) Indian breakfast (Idly, dosa, puri). We went back to Ramasamudram and the three were really shocked, everything was so different. Elisa and I were really tired and tried to sleep a bit.

And then Christmas was finally there! We celebrated in typical German manner on the evening of the 24.12. We invited the friends of Avinash who helped us with the Christmas tree, as well as the teachers from school. In the end we were approximately 21 people. We were standing (sitting would be the better word) in the kitchen the whole day. We made dumplings with red cabbage and a salad, as well as vegetable rice and sweet rice. We had really a lot of food and it was more than enough for all the people. It was really stressful but also a very nice Christmas Eve.

Tomorrow is already New Year’s Eve and I will be in the new year 4 ½ hours before the people in Germany that is really strange. One year is over and it also shows my half year which is already over in India.

Next week there the students will have exams and then there will be holidays. My parents are at the moment on the Andaman Island and will come back on the 07.01. One day later we will go on holidays together to Udupi and Gokarna.

Elisa is now travelling with her boyfriend, then she will do an internship in Bangalore and in march she will come and visit us again for a short time.

Was ist passiert? What happend?

Namaskram meine Lieben :)

Namaskaram everybody :)

It took me some time to upload a new blogpost again but here we go. Because of a cyclone and a damaged keyboard (the rain destroyed it) I could not upload anything on here.

At the moment Elisa, a friend of my host brother is living in the volunteer house as well. She stays till the end of December and supports my host mother in school. After that she we travel and make an internship at a private university for two months. Elisa comes from Germany and did a volunteer year in Italy where she met Avinash (who is now studying in Italy).

It is nice that we can celebrate the Christmas time together in a “german” way. We even crafted a Christmas wreath with flowers and BEAUTIFUL candles. ;) Besides we have many ideas what we can do with the children in school. With the 4th and 5th we want to do a nativity play and craft some “Fröbelsterne”, as well as practicing some Christmas songs with all the children. They will sing them on the Christmas function.

So there are many things to do till Christmas. We also have to find Christmas presents for all the members of our host family and we try to get in the Christmas mood. For Christmas we want to cook some German Christmas dinner like “Klöße” and “Rotkohl”. I will report how all of our plans went.
But I want to come back to the cyclone. You have to imagine that it rained through nearly 2 weeks! Everything was wet: the beds, the air and the clothes. Especially the clothes where a big problem because they could not dry properly they were smelling like you put the wet clothes in a corner and forgot it. Furthermore the roads were so slippery that you can hardly walk on them.

On the second weekend in November is was in Bangalore with Elisa and Nele where we couchsurft again. We were hosted by a super friendly married couple who even gave us their bed. It is crazy how I enjoy sleeping in a real bed and having a warm shower. In Bangalore we went shopping and in the evening we went to a restaurant with our hosts. A tip which really helped us out is the Uber app. This is an app where you can order a private taxi on your phone. It costs as much as a rickscha and is much safer because you pay with credit card and there is a fixed price per km. Besides you can’t be sure if the rickscha drivers try to cheat you. For us it was working really good and it is much more comfortable, especially when it’s raining. I think it is working in all the bigger cities and I think Nele and I will try it again when we are travelling.

At the first Advent weekend Elisa, Nele and I went to see the Hosely Hills with a friend of Avinash. The hosely Hills are hills where you have a beautiful view over the landscape. Unfortunately when we there it was raining, cold and foggy. That made the view a bit less beautiful but I liked it.
